One dahlia, and nothing else. The bloom is built petal by petal from deep magenta chenille, dozens of narrow rolled petals spiralling out from a darker centre, each one soft enough to press flat and springy enough to come back. A single sage green leaf sits on the stem just below the head.
A single stem is the easiest thing to give. Slip it into a bud vase on a desk, lay it across a wrapped present instead of a bow, or hand it over as it is. It says what a whole bouquet says, quietly, and it never has to be thrown away.
